What is a plus size Model

A plus or plus size model is the term applied to a person of medium to large stature (sometimes, but not exclusively overweight) who is primarily engaged in modeling oversized clothing. You can be plus size and still become a petite models if your body allows it.

Plus-size models are also engaged in jobs that are not strictly related to the sale of oversized clothing, for example, stock photography and advertising photography for cosmetics, household and pharmaceutical products and sunglasses, footwear and watches .

Therefore, the plus size models do not exclusively wear clothing marketed as “plus size”.

Generally, companies look for someone above 5’10” and in the 10-14 size range. Some smaller, some slightly larger. Agular faces and hourglass shapes are the usual.

Tess Holliday (previously Tess Munster) is much larger and much shorter at 5’4” and a size 22/24 but that is certainly the exception and not the rule.

Where can you work as a plus size model

Theses types of models can work with many brands in all settings as a regular model can. The only difference is the type of brands they will represent. Plus-size models pose for photographs for clothing retailers and manufacturers to show off the new styles of the season in catalogs, commercials, magazine and online advertisements, and on websites.

Models have their makeup applied and hair fixed prior to photo shoots, then they pose and alter their facial expressions in order to assist photographers in capturing the perfect shot that creates the desired impression. The goal is to entice consumers to purchase the new clothing styles by showing how good the plus-sized model looks while wearing the apparel. Plus size model Victoria’s Secret

Do you want to become a Victoria’s Secret model?, For some models slipping on a pair of Angel wings is the ultimate dream. Becoming a Victoria’s Secret model or Angel means you’ll be joining the ranks of superstars like Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Helena Christensen, Stephanie Seymour, Gisele Bundchen, and Adriana Lima. You can be a lingerie model for Victoria’s Secret too.

The fashion show, the travel, the lucrative contracts—who wouldn’t want to be part of such an elite club?

But beyond the heavenly bodies, glowing skin, and girl-next-door sexiness, what does it take to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel? And how do you become one? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all (it never is in the modeling world), but there are a few things you can do to increase your chances.

Plus Size Model Requirements

plus size model

As with all modeling gigs, there are no hard rules when it comes to basic physical requirements. But in general, aspiring Victoria’s Secret Angels must:

  • Ages of 18 and 30
  • Be healthy and in great shape
  • Have a slim build, yet be slightly more voluptuous than a typical runway model (34-24-34, give or take an inch, is the industry standard)
  • Be between 5’8’’ and 6’0’’

Plus Size Model Requirements from A Model

Beth Lawson, works at QVC as a plus size model for 10 years and this is what she has to say about her experience in plus size modeling:

“Generally speaking, you must be a minimum height of 5′10″. Also, your body measurements must be in direct proportion, and; it is true that the hourglass frame is the desired body type for plus size models. That being said, there are exceptions to the rule.

Her experience as a plus size model

I was a curvy model on QVC for 10 years, and; I was represented by Reinhard Agency in Philadelphia. My height is only 5′5″. There are situations where, if the agency or booker likes your “look”, they will be willing to take a chance and represent you. I was too short to compete in the New York market, but; I had a very successful career for 10 years in Philadelphia.

Its a competitive market, and modeling is not for the faint of heart. You will face rejection, criticism, and lots of cutthroat, and; you must be ambitious and aggressive. However, it can be a very exciting and lucrative career.”

Plus size model size

Plus size modeling is a little different from other divisions of modeling in that size is important more than exact measurements.

Models are generally size 12 and up with good body proportions. A general rule is that your waist should be about 10 inches smaller than your hips, but that’s just a guideline.

plus size modeling

Plus model size

you do not have a size 10 or 12, but your measurements are more generous and are outside the canons established by the fashion of recent years, you know that recently there is a new trend that claims women of conventional plus sizes and more adjusted to the real life.

Curvy Models

curvy models wanted

These new models are called large or curvy models, and they are beginning to appear on magazine covers and be represented by brands that want to convey more closeness, targeting a more real and more represented audience in society. If you are a curvy woman who wants to be a commercial model to have your picture on this site visit ICMODEL.com

Famous Plus Size models

As an example you have the model Ashley Graham (Instagram: @asleygraham) as one of the best and most famous representatives of this type of models.

Having a size larger than size 12 is considered “plus size”, however this size is considered normal in society, so far being out of the fashion world.

This trend begins to change and we want to give an example that having curves is not incompatible with being attractive, beautiful and desirable.

So now the size is not going to be a limitation for your aspirations as a model and the doors open to enter a world where competition is still scarce and the possibilities are increasing.

Plus size modeling

Plus Size Models Agency

Do you really need a plus size model agency? Unfortunately, as in almost all sectors, there are people and companies willing to take advantage of others, especially illusions, in this case of young people who are willing to enter this competitive world. If you don’t have the requirements to become a plus size model and are more on the petite model side, you still can model the best clothing brands for your body.

Become a Commercial Model

An alternatively you can skip the agency and sign up on ICMODEL.com to become your own model agent. ICMODEL will give you exposure for interest people looking for curvy models. Becoming a mature model is not a big barrier either as long as you have taken good care of your body.

You will have total control of who you will work for and when. You have to do your own booking and scheduling. It will be your own business per say.

In such a way that they will promise you results that will never come. Meanwhile, they will try to take your money with quotas, making mediocre photo books, which will serve you little or nothing.

They will propose you promotional works in which you will not charge anything, while they make economic returns with your work and, worst of all, they could end your illusions.

So, be very careful with scams and let yourself be advised by the people who love you and want to take care of you. The first thing you have to do is inform yourself and do a research exercise.

The easiest thing is that you start looking for agencies that are in your locality or the closest to your place of residence, find out what is said about them, especially by other models, and introduce yourself to meet them, know their conditions and guarantees. Or you can just create a plus size model profile at ICMODEL.com

Create a picture portfolio

Create a good portfolio and photo book, be honest with your measurements and do not be discouraged if you are not called by some of them, you may not fit the profile they usually represent.

Be selective and look for agencies that sell profiles similar to yours, that will save you time and disappointments.

In this world you will find many NO and closed doors, but perseverance and believing in yourself is a resource that, surely, will open many other doors that do not close for you. Find other related information on how to become a plus size model here.

Plus size Modeling Stories and Opinions Before you Become a Plus size Model

Do we Hate Plus Size Models

Sorry, did you say that we don’t hate on overweight models?

Ahahahahaahahahahaaaa, good one. I wish.

Let’s pick one example. In 2017, the Ashley Graham became the first ever plus sized model to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue. She’s even been mentioned in several other answers to this question.

Plus size Modeling

The reactions to her cover photos were… not very kind.

“No, I don’t think it’s healthy. Her face is beautiful. Beautiful. But I don’t think it’s healthy in the long run.”

“Who is this heifer?”

“She’s a promoter of diabetes.

“It’s everybody gets a gold star time! I want to eat cookies and still be a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model; what’s next, you can be a midget and a Rockette? What’s wrong with having a physical standard for something?

“If any of the other models showed up looking like her, they’d be fired. How the f— is that fair? The truth is if she worked out a little bit more, she wouldn’t be plus-size any more, which means she can’t sell s— to plus-size women who’ve turned her into their hero. So to make money, she’s keeping the weight on.”

Ashley Graham Sports Illustrated is a Beautiful Plus Size Model

And the hate goes on…

“You are not plus size — you are FAT and definitely not as attractive as you think you are. Big t**s do not make a woman — a big heart does and yours is as small as your pea brain.”

(I left out the horrific racial slurs surrounding this passage, you can find them at the link below if you wish.)

This is barely even the surface of what hate mail an “overweight” model gets on the regular.

For her part, Ashley Graham has repeatedly and publicly addressed the accusation that she promoted an unhealthy standard.

Plus Size Models are Healthy and in Shape

First, she is in fact in great health— she regularly works out quite intensely and eats a healthy and varied diet. At one photo shoot, her blood and the blood of a “straight plus size model” model were tested side-by-side and both received healthier than average scores on both bad and good cholesterol, among other measures. While we all know about underweight models who can be unhealthy, there are also a great many models who are within the “healthy weight” range but are nonetheless not healthy internally.

What a Plus Size Model Really Want

Second, she doesn’t want people to gain weight to try and look like her. (Frankly, even if we could gain the weight, 99.99% of us wouldn’t look like her anyways— genetics are responsible for her attractive bone structure and fat distribution, plus a lot of hard work.) She encourages people to embrace health, beauty, and happiness at whatever size and shape they are. Models who had eating disorders have messaged her in gratitude, saying she inspired them to stop abusing their bodies and get help. Regular people have shared that her message encouraged them to not let their appearance stop them from trying new things, going swimming, making friends, etc.

Shame for being a Plus Size Model?

“Shame is not a good motivator for weight loss in overweight individuals. It just isn’t. Shame causes depression and helplessness, which are more likely to promote body-abusing practices than healthy body care habits.

When is the last time you embarked on a long, difficult, challenging, often joyless, and life-changing path because you were shamed by people who thought you were disgusting for how you looked? Did you get married motivated by shame? Earn a degree out of shame? Buy a house because of shame? Raise children through sheer shame?

There are likely a few people who would take that shame, turn it to spite, and end up succeeding. Those people are a small minority. A few more might have done that thing because of shame and hated themselves all the more at the end of it. Most of us humans don’t find shame and disgust to be good motivation to make any big life-altering changes.

Plus Size Models are Support Themselves

Humans do, however, perform remarkable feats with love and enjoyment as motivators.

Participating in regular physical exercise is an act of body love.

Preparing and eating meals that fuel your body well is an act of body love.

Engaging in social activities, wearing clothes that you feel good in, drinking water, getting regular doctor check-ups, performing at work, caring for family and friends, pursuing your life goals? Those actions are powered by love, not shame.

So no, I don’t think “love yourself at any size” is a bad image to promote. The world could use a lot more of it, and kindness besides.

The Plus SizeModel Term is Pathetic

Well I genuinely believe that this concept of “plus sized models” is pathetic. It simply represents how people have given up on themselves as well as forgotten what is hardwork. It also implies how lazy our society has become who refuses to work on themselves and therefore aren’t willing to see an ideal body as it simply makes them restless and envious.

I don’t mean to fat shame people and I don’t have any problems with fat people as well , but what bothers me is the change in definition of a model! A model is supposed to be a person whom everyone wants to be like , one who has a body that everyone would desire for . Who would want to become like a plus sized model. Honestly these people out there with big mouths even don’t like them personally but they can’t help but encourage it just to maintain an image.

With the Upcoming of Plus Size Models, we can all be One

A model is supposed to be having an “ideal” body which is close to impossible to acheive , that’s what there profession is for. With the incoming of plus sized models , it’s so easy to become one ! What about those hard working people who don’t have one gram of sugar to ensure that they look perfect! Everything in vain. And afterall I would like to question this to everyone, “ how do you expect companies to increase their sales , when they will be making unattractive people as their brand ambassadors ?” Let’s be honest , no one likes plus sized models , it’s not a question of morality , it’s the harsh truth that no one would ever acknowledge publicly but everyone thinks the same.

How do Plus Size Models buy Clothes

So now next time you want to buy a t-shirt and you see how it looks on a model (plus sized one) , you are probably gonna throw away that choice . Because models are meant to look the BEST!! People only buy clothes when they see how it looks on the model and how would it look on them.. for god’s sake , people should just start being honest and practical enough to agree to this and start working on yourself , just because you can’t become a model , doesn’t mean that you should change the definition of a freaking model. I am sorry for hurting anyone’s feeling , but this is what I beleive and I hope I have made my point clear . BEST OF LUCK! And please don’t jump on me in the comments section..

How Do Plus Size Models Take Care of Themselves

I’ll answer this as someone who has been involved with fitness and exercise all their life and not as an expert on plus size models’ figures (although I do study the subject occasionally). Although there may well be some genetically gifted models who do not accumulate belly fat like most people, they would be few and far between. Fat in women tends to accumulate around the hips/thighs/stomach. Women who are ‘almost’ fat-free above the waist, can be very large below the waist, while the opposite is almost never the case (except in alcoholics).

The Curvy or Plus Size Model Figure

A young girl may have this sort of figure (unlikely but possible) but for an adult woman to be heavy in every area except the stomach is very nearly an impossibility (don’t blame ME for this) and for a plus size model to appear so, is most likely the result of liposuction. The appearance of a flat stomach can also be created by altering the picture or using poses that don’t highlight that area. If you feel the need to send me hate mail over this, you’re talking to wrong person.”

Flaunt Models

Is a plus model model management agency who actually has a plus size model on their main webpage. They have been in the modeling industry for 30 year and are proud of all their models in runways, tv, commercials, and much more.

Ford Plus Size Division

Ford+, the plus size division of Ford models, just put out a new promotional book featuring some of their top models. What’s striking about Ford’s latest promotional push is that it’s simply comprised of beautiful high-fashiony images of models who happen to not be straight size (that means they are not a 0 and can be anywhere from a size 8 to 18). It seems to be (and hopefully is) part of trend of incorporating models who aren’t 0s and 2s–not just Crystal Renn–into the high fashion world, beyond catalogues.

Gary Dakin, the head of Ford’s plus board, has been with the modeling agency for the last 13 years. In that time span, he says the market has changed dramatically for plus size models. “There are better clients, jobs, photographers, rates, etc.,” he says. “The girls have evolved too…they are challenged now more than ever to be better and they challenge the industry right back.” Dakin pinpoints the moment the industry began shifting to embrace plus to around 10 years ago.

Heffner Management

Heffner Management opened its doors in 1984 with a simple mission: to bring a fresh new approach to the modeling industry in the Pacific Northwest. We are dedicated to providing personalized development and support to the diverse portfolio of models we represent.

The agency’s powerful combination of dynamics – the models, the clients, the staff, the relationships, the success stories – has established our prominence in the direct booking market. Heffner Management strives to be at the forefront of promoting change, diversity, and inclusivity in the industry. We work to foster a welcoming community with the models we represent and the clients we serve.

Our strength lies in our versatile board of stunning high end women and men, catalog women and men, plus, and classics divisions as well as cutting edge new faces. Our team has invested themselves in actively scouting and developing new faces, placing plus size models, and maintaining relationships with all the best-known fashion agencies in the world while continuously managing our models throughout their careers.
